Bella Abzug, riding atop a sound truck, invaded he stronghold of Representative Leonard Farbstein on the Lower East Side yesterday.
Up and down Grand Street, near the home of Mr. Farbstein in the Hillman-Amalgamated House, Mrs. Abzug waged her campaign to win the Democratic nomination in the 19th Congressional District.
Crowds ranging from 300 to 500 gathered to see Mrs. Abzug, a Reform Democrat, and one of her leading backers, Barbra Streisand, the singer actress.
Mrs. Abzug challenged Mr. Farbstein on various issues. At times, she spoke in Yiddish to the predominantly Jewish audience.
The district, with a population of 445,000, extends from West 83d Street through Reform strongholds in the middle West Side, Chelsea and Greenwich Village, then cuts through the regular Democratic citadel of the Lower East Side.
