About the Album/Duet

Streisand's note to Bennett, from the CD insert

Tony Bennett told author Jeff Touzeau in Artists on Recording Technique about how he recorded “Smile” with Barbra:

“We did that song at her home out in Malibu on a beautiful day. We recorded it in one or two takes in her living room, which happens to have a spectacular view of the ocean. Barbra didn't really understand why I chose that particular song, so I explained that even though the song was written many, many years ago by Charlie Chaplin for the movie Modern Times, one of the great movies that he made, it still has a particular relevance today because of 9/11 ... I said, ‘Barbra, this is the kind of thing you believe in!’ I got through to her, and she sung it beautifully—she smacked it right out of the ballpark.”
